It's that time of the year again where we get super excited about the NBA's All-Star Dunk Contest...before eventually realizing that the contest hasn't really been exciting in years, and that there are probably cooler, more jaw-dropping dunks on YouTube.
But don't tell that to this year's crop of rim-rattlers. In this year's Sprite Slam Dunk Contest, we have the Brooklyn Nets' Mason Plumlee, the Minnesota Timberwolves' Zach LaVine, the Orlando Magic's Victor Oladipo, and the Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The four competitors were announced in an ESPN report. The contest, which will be held on February 14 at Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, will have two rounds with no time limits. Each player will need to complete two dunks each, and a maximum of three attempts for each. The top two players—scored by five judges via the traditional six to 10 card ratings—will move on to the final round. The contestants will also need to complete two dunks, and the one with the best aggregated final round score will be crowned champ.
Now wake up as we have ourselves a preview of things to come with help from, what else, YouTube!
Player comparison: Basically a stiffer paler Amare Stoudemire
Fighting words:
Our prediction: A 3rd place finish. Historically, big guys don't get a lot of love in the dunk contest. Amare and Dwight Howard are rare examples of a big guy winning it all. He's third here because he has homecourt advantage.
Player comparison: The second coming of Gerald Green
Fighting words:
Our prediction: The winner/champion. Because have you seen the amount of air he had that behind-the-back slam? He's got the hops. The only question is if he can handle the spotlight, and with his brash tweet, we're thinking he can.
Fighting words:
Prediction: A very, very close second place. The dude's a thunderous dunker and owns the world's most amazing non-dunk ever:
Player comparison: Kevin Durant with even longer limbs
Fighting words:
Prediction: Giannis is the Dark horse of this year's Dunk Contest. Giannis' length and hops make his dunks special when he's dunking on in-game opponents. But we have yet to see the guy show off some real individual creativity. Going into the contest, can he make the arena shake with something other than his raw athleticism?
So which player are you betting on, fellow dunk fan?
